Soft, wavy hair has been all over the catwalk recently. This look is what is known as mermaid waves. It is a very easy style to accomplish at home and is particularly great in the spring time.
What You Need
- hair mousse
- spray on hair oil
- a curling wand
- a large hair brush
- hair clips (optional)
- rat tail comb (optional)
Preparing Your Hair
If you want to do mermaid waves the first thing you need to do is begin with a nice center part. The center part also acts as a sort of guideline and you can use a rat tail comb to create a part very easily.
After parting, prep your hair with a bit of spray mousse. This will make it easier to curl and help your curls to stay, especially if you have straight hair. The waves begin in the middle area of your hair or just below your ears or so. Do not apply mousse above the point where the curls start because you do not want your hair to be stiff. If you want you can use a hair clip to mark your hair where you want the curls to begin and it can act as a reminder.
Curling Your Hair
Mermaid waves are easy to do with a curling wand, but you can also use curling tongs or rollers, whatever you prefer. If using a wand all you need to do is place the wand where you want the curls to start then wrap a section of your hair around the rod. Be sure to wrap your hair in a movement that is away from your face. Hold it in place on the wand for about 5 seconds or so. You do not want a really tight curl. Let it go and then just leave it and allow it to cool.
Repeat this process around the head and be sure to start your curls at roughly the same point for each section. Curl the hair is small sections and be careful not to leave any sections uncurled. It is ok though to leave some of the hair in front straight. It will help to frame your face more if that is something you want.
Finishing The Look
After you have gone around and curled all of your hair then you can prep the top part of your hair as the curls cool. This is optional. If you have frizzy hair or you want a smoother look you want to apply a bit of mousse to your comb and comb it into your hair from the part down to your hair clip where your curls begin. Apply more mousse for a more wet look. Spray on a bit of spray oil.
Finally, carefully brush out your curls. Break up the curls and create your soft waves. Work around and then hold the waves in place with hairspray. Finally give all of your hair a spritz of hair oil.
