The next time you want a new pair of sunglasses you do not need to go out and buy a new pair. Instead you can engage in a fun and easy do-it-yourself project and just embellish an plain, old pair. You can make your old sunglasses into brand new, flashy and fashionable ones. Customizing your sunglasses with rhinestones is a great summer look that will add lots of sparkle to any outfit or when you are out at the pool.
What You Need
- old sunglasses
- a glue gun
- rhinestone gems
- a pair of tweezers
- a saucer or small plate
First you need to prepare all of your supplies. Get a saucer or a small plate. A small paper plate will work or a little saucer for a teacup. Put your rhinestones onto your plate. This will make them easier to work with and stop them from rolling all over. Go ahead and turn on your glue gun so it can start to get warmed up.
Using Hot Glue
Once your glue gun is warmed up and ready to use you want to apply a bit of glue to the outside edge of your sunglasses frames. Be careful not to get any glue on the lenses and you really only need a little bit to get the job done. Also be careful when working with the glue because it is very hot. It is recommended that you work on only a small section at a time. Do not apply your glue all around both lenses at once.
Attaching The Rhinestones
Use your tweezers to pick up one rhinestone at a time. Place each one into the glue before it cools and build up a nice layer of gems around the outside edge of the lenses. You will want to work both carefully as well as quickly because hot glue sets rapidly as it begins to cool off. Be careful not to leave any large gaps between gems.
Embellishing The Arms
Along with making your frames look flashy you may also want to add some embellishment to the arms of your sunglasses. Use the same technique with the glue and your tweezers as before or you can also mix it up. A neat way to create a 3D effect and a change in texture is actually to just sprinkle your rhinestones into the glue after you have applied it rather than being so methodical. You may want to go back in with the tweezers to adjust a few here and there or to fill in large gaps.
Sit your new sunglasses aside and allow the glue to completely set before you wear them. It will not take very long just as long as it takes for the hot glue to completely cool off. After this put on your sunglasses and enjoy them. You have a brand new pair and you found a use for an old, boring pair at the same time.
