The 90s were the decade when the grunge style rose to prominence. Today, a 90s-inspired grunge chic look is seeing a big resurgence in popular fashion. The original grunge look was based around the grunge music scene – Nirvana, Peal Jam and other groups. Original grunge was a unique merging of 80s punk style with the working class. It was very comfortable and looked sort of dirty. You do not need to be dirty for grunge today, but you definitely need to focus on a relaxed look. Do not spend too much time getting ready if you are going grunge. It should be quick and easy and above all, it should be comfortable. It can still be cute and stylish too. Flannel and denim were two staples and they still are.
Any kind of plaid is great and is one of the key elements of grunge. Plaid and grunge go pretty much hand in hand. Basic plaid as well as checkerboard plaid shirts are a must. Most all colors are fine, especially earth tones, blues and traditional red and black plaid too of course. You can either wear your plaid shirt as your top or layer it over a t-shirt. An over sized plaid shirt is great paired with a black t-shirt representing your favorite band You can also tie a long sleeved plaid shirt around your waist.
For an authentic grunge look you definitely want to wear jeans. Make sure your jeans are baggy and loose fitting and it is completely ok if they are ripped. Steer clear of your nice and new skinny jeans. Torn, frayed or even patched jeans are best. Short jean shorts will also work. Cut-off shorts are best and you can easily make your own cut-offs from an old pair of jeans. This is a perfect project for your jeans that even too worn out for grunge. Also grab a denim jacket.
Accessorizing is always important and it is important in grunge fashion too. Keep your eyes peeled for metal, mechanical looking jewelry. Avoid going too steampunk, but anything with an industrial appearance is good. Wooden jewelry with a wooden appearance can also be a good accent for grunge. Crucifixes as well as peace signs were popular in the 90s too. Lots of mismatched bracelets can go well with a grunge outfit. As far as shoes go – do not put on your heels for your grunge ensemble. Opt for combat boots, Converses, or even Doc Martens. Remember that comfort is extremely important. You want to look relaxed.
Hair and Make Up
Keep your make up very minimalist. If you wear eye shadow for a bit of color then use earth tones. Dark eyeliner is fine and if you wear lip stick then make it red, mauve or a dark wine color. Let your hair be natural if you want to go grunge. Do not straighten your hair unless you have to. Frizzy hair is ok and so is a little bit of bed head.
